10 Best Garage Workbenches Dream Design Diy

Inside: A superb selection of 10 DIY Garage Workbench projects to help you design and build the perfect workbench for your garage space.

A garage workbench comes in many shapes and sizes and can be created to fit a variety of garage needs. In this round-up of The 10 Best Garage Workbench Builds I made sure to provide a variety of options from simple to more involved builds to fit several different spaces, functions, preferences and budgets.

Before I built my DIY Garage Workbench I used a fold-out card table that I got from my grandma. Sometimes one of the legs would give out while I was working on projects. It was scary and humbling as well. Speaking from experience, while attempting to work on projects in a garage with no workspace, leads to clutter, disorganization and ultimately frustration. Something is better than nothing until you have the time, space and funds to build your own.

Every garage benefits from a workbench so you have a space to fix/tinker/work on home improvement projects. If you own a home there is no doubt that you will be working on home projects even minor ones. Once you finish your project make sure to add these 10 Must Have Garage Workbench Accessories.

3 Things to Consider when Deciding on the Best Garage Workbench Build:

  • Size of the space available for a workbench
  • Cost/your budget
  • Function/purpose

Size of Space for Garage Workbench

When it comes to the size of your garage workbench measure the exact dimensions of your allowable space. This factor alone determines your build size regardless of your dreams of a huge workbench. When it comes to a smaller space think about whether you want a workbench that is wall-mounted, hinge-mounted, mobile or fixed. If you find a style of workbench you like customize it to fit the available space.

Cost of Garage Workbench

Most often as the size and complexity of a workbench increases so does the cost. If you have a budget your working with then this will dictate the build you can afford. However, having a cost limitation isn't always a bad thing. Get creative and think outside the box with what you can do with the money you have. Think upcycle and recycling items and utilizing websites that you can get used, low cost and FREE items like Craigs List, Offer Up, Next Door and Facebook Marketplace.

Function of Garage Workbench

Think about how you are going to use the workbench. Will you use it to store or hang any power tools? What size and type of projects do you typically work on or plan to work on? Do you want shelves, wheels, electrical power? When I built my workbench I built the height of it about 1/2 inch lower than my table saw so it would function as an out feed for cutting wood. I wanted it mobile so I could easily move it around my garage. I also wanted some shelves to store smaller and larger power tools. Knowing the function will help determine and direct your build plans.

So without further ado here are the 10 garage workbenches starting with a more simple build and less expensive, then moving up to more complex builds and therefore more expensive builds (generally speaking but not always the case).

If your garage space is limited with no room on the floor consider these next three builds.

DIY Folding Workbench

If your space affords a little more room for a workbench and can be a work area that doesn't have to be tucked away like the examples above, then consider the next few options.

The creator of the blog states she built this garage workbench in less than one hour by herself and she was pregnant. Workshop Assembly Table

This next garage workbench I give the most points for creativity.  The blogger of Sawdust to Stitches used a variety of upycling and recycling to create her Workshop Assembly Table spending only $60 to complete the project. She put this workbench together using a disassembled old workbench and added a door as the top she got FREE from Craigs List. She also used a shelf from another FREE Craigs List find. She then added scrap wood to it to make the wood dividers for her power tools.  She has shown me that "thinking outside the box" using non traditional products can bring about a solid build and it looks fantastic.
